AWA Webinar Series 2

On the 9th, 10th and 12th of April 2019, the African Waste Academy continued with the second series of its ongoing webinar programme. Chris Whyte kick started the series with his insightful and encouraging presentation, “Addressing solutions and applications for marine plastic waste,” where he described multiple ways in which waste diversion can be maximised through innovation and technology that results in job creation and economic development (Click here for presentation slides). Prof Linda Godfrey spoke on “The state & impact of waste management in Africa – the growing problem of single use plastic,” (Click here for presentation slides). Prof Godfrey’s presentation enthralled the audience and sparked much discussion during the webinar on the way forward for Africa. Prof Godfrey highlighted that in her opinion “there is no one, single solution,” to single-use plastic leakage in Africa. Ruben Hazelzet concluded the series with his exciting talk, “Captain Fanplastic,” showcasing Soapbox South Africa’s new and exciting education programme geared to captivate children and change their behaviour towards sustainable waste management.

The African Waste Academy would like to once again thank the inspiring speakers of Webinar Series 2 and would like to encourage those interested in presenting in a future series to contact Stephanie Marin at steph@africanwastenetwork.org.za. The next instalment to the webinar programme is scheduled for June 2019. Watch our events page for more details.
