Aaniyah, the founder and director of The Beach Coop takes us through the sorting system they use to classify litter gathered during their monthly beach clean ups. “Youth citizen science on the rocks: the LIMPET Marine Monitoring programme” by Maya Pfaff:
Maya shares the story of the LIMPET Marine Monitoring programme which educates learners in local high schools about the value of the marine environment. The programme is run by a team of educators and scientists who established LIMPET to encourage environmental stewardship while contributing to mathematics and science skills and gather valuable data for environmental monitoring at the same time. “Marine Litter and Citizen Science – An opportunity” by Martin Thiel:
Martin discusses the Citizen Science programme, Garbage Scientists which has been running since 2007. After sharing some of the scientific and awareness work that they’ve done with the network of schools in South America, he discusses points to keep in mind when embarking on similar types of projects, as well as the potential of citizen science to enact substantial change in regulations. “Unleashing the Potential of Citizen Science as Educational Tool towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Quality Education for an empowered society” by Imane Baïz:
Imane shares methodologies and case studies from the citizen science projects run by the CRI (Centre for Research and Interdisciplinarity) in 17 locations across Europe. The ‘Doing it together Science’ programme included various experiments and collaborative opportunities for high school learners including investigations mapping microalgae, exploring bioremediation, and the filtration capabilities of Kombucha.
