Tackling Plastic Pollution Through Collaboration: A Call to Action

Plastic pollution is a growing threat to our oceans, and nowhere is this more evident than in African coastal cities. At SST, we believe that the key to combatting this issue lies in collaboration with like-minded organisations. By working together, we can amplify our efforts and create a more significant impact.

The Scale of the Problem

Global plastic production has increased drastically from 2 million tonnes in 1950 to over 450 million tonnes today.

8 million pieces of plastic enter the ocean every day.

12 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the ocean annually.

80% of marine debris is plastic.

By 2050, plastic could outweigh all fish in the sea if business continues as usual.

The Power of Collaboration

Collaboration brings together diverse expertise, resources, and perspectives, which are crucial in addressing complex environmental challenges. When organisations unite, they can share best practices, innovate solutions, and mobilise communities more effectively. In Nelson Mandela Bay, partnerships have already led to successful clean-ups, educational programmes, and community awareness campaigns.

One of our recent collaborations, which we hope will yield a significant impact in waste management and promote a circular economy, is with the UNISA School of Ecological and Human Sustainability, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, and the South African International Maritime Institute.

As SST, we believe that partnering with these institutions will not only raise awareness about the importance of reducing plastic use, but also result in a noticeable decrease in plastic waste in our coastal areas through our combined efforts.

Expanding Our Reach

Our vision extends beyond Nelson Mandela Bay. We aim to connect with organisations in Cape Town, Durban and other African coastal cities to create a network of committed groups working towards a common goal. By sharing resources and strategies, we can tackle plastic pollution on a larger scale. This network will enable us to support each other, learn from each other’s successes and challenges, and drive collective action.

A Call to Action

We invite and encourage like-minded organisations to join us in this mission. Whether you’re a community group, a school, a business, or an NGO, your involvement can make a difference. Together, we can create cleaner, more sustainable oceans for future generations.

Get Involved

By fostering collaboration, we can achieve more than we ever could alone. Join us in making a lasting impact on our environment.
