SST is a non-profit, science-based organisation inspiring organisations and individuals to become committed and passionate custodians of Africa’s seas.
SST is currently partnering with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to work towards zero waste to the seas of Africa. This challenging, yet exciting goal is possible through a committed team of research scientists working in a structured environment, with solid governance and diligence managing our partners funding in the most responsible, ethical and efficient manner.
Over the last few years, SST has undergone exciting changes and has been steadily working hard to improve our governance structures. In line with our organisational strategies, SST is focusing on implementing best practice governance and internal controls, monitoring, updating and creating new policies and procedures and ensuring that SST is in compliance with all laws and regulations, making us a responsible corporate citizen.
Furthermore, in line with SST’s future growth aspirations, we are working tirelessly to ensure that we are appropriately positioned to expand and grow in line with our strategic objectives.
Sustainability is a major risk, and as our name suggests, SST is looking at ways to become financially self-sustaining in the long term. This will take considerable time and effort, but the team is investigating long term strategies that will help SST flourish well into the future. We are continually looking for high-performing individuals who can join us and bring their expertise to work as an ambassador for SST, as we grow a culture of ethics and transparency.
Looking back on the first half of the year, we have seen many positive structures being put in place, such as new and revised policies, stronger financial analysis, improvement in the accuracy of accounting and reporting, working towards standardised reporting templates, additional focus and greater attention to detail, improved visibility of financial information, more accurate reconciliations as well as staff training on the fundamentals of project cost management.
With these changes, our financial results will become more consistent and predictable, which will lead to greater credibility amongst our stakeholders, as well as positioning SST as a reputable steward of funding.
All journeys need to start somewhere, and the groundwork is currently being laid for a strong foundation of internal control and governance that will support SST as it grows and expands into the future. A future where the people of Africa and her seas flourish together.
