We are proud to announce that the 2023 edition of the African Litter Monitoring Manual – a guide for harmonised litter monitoring in different environments – is now available.
Accounting for Africa’s limited resources, the methods are simple and feasible to empower citizen scientists, researchers and other stakeholders, with different languages and backgrounds, with the knowledge and tools needed to learn about the sources and pathways of litter.
The use of harmonised methods promotes result comparisons, and data-sharing between organisations and regions, thus broadening the impact of the work done. This is especially important in light of the global plastics treaty that is currently under negotiation to tackle plastic pollution.
The methods outlined in this manual promote large-scale collection of reliable data on plastic pollution and enable countries with limited resources to accurately assess litter baselines, identify key areas for action and monitor progress towards meeting the treaty targets.
