National Science Week

On the 31st July 2019, the SST education team participated in the National Science Week hosted by the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre. The event was attended by 106 school learners from the Uitenhage area. This year’s theme for National Science Week is Facing the Harsh Realities of Climate Change. The SST team gave a talk that linked plastic pollution to global climate change.

SST also facilitated a clean-up just behind the People Pavilion in Uitenhage. A total of 75.9 kg of recyclable waste was and 73.6 kg of general waste was collected by the learners in just a period of 20 minutes!! All of this waste could have ended up in the Swartkops River and threatened both humans and animals.

We would like to give a big thank you to The Waste Trade Company for collecting all the waste after the clean-up. A big thank you to Volkswagen Community Trust South Africa for their sponsorship including gloves, aprons, plastic bags, a prize and venue! Many thanks to the NMB Science and Technology Centre for allowing us to be a part of this amazing event!
